There are many mysterious remains of buildings in the Hanan. Not all of their uses are known, but they all had ceremonial or sacred uses. And the misty afternoon light that fills the valley below is certainly magical.
The Hanan Pacha, or upper part of Choquequirao corresponded to the sacred world of the Spirits in Incan mythology. Only priests and shamans were allowed up to this area. Here was the start of the waterway used to feed the rest of the complex, itself considered sacred. This area was used for funerary rites (Hanan Pacha I) and to worship the elements, the sun, moon, stars, and the Earth (Hanan Pacha II and III).
