The lower levels of Choquequirao were mostly massive terraces used for agriculture. This level of reality was representative of the source of 'heavy energies' such as fear and shame, and also the places where these energies could be transmuted and recycled by the Pachamama, or mother Earth. In this particular set of terraces there is also a complex, multi-level building known as the House of the Falling Water, where legend says that the priestesses were bathed.
Located farther down the same sacred mountain, Apu Choquequirao, this lower world corresponded to the underworld of the Incas. Later corrupted to include demons and evil spirits, this level of reality was considered the source of ‘heavy’ energies such as fear and shame. It is also where such energies were purified, given back to the Earth to transmute.
