This massive set of terraces several hours beyond Choquequirao is still mostly overgrown by plants. There are two distinct structures. One surrounding the irrigation system that still functions today. The other is at the top center, and is built into several protruding rock formations. One of the formations resembles a puma standing on its hind legs. The puma was one of the three sacred animals of the Incas, representing the middle world of experience. Although there has been very little study about this site, its main purpose was agricultural. Why the Incas would build such a complex agricultural system on the side of a mountain with nothing else around is a mystery. It suggests that this site was part of a larger structure, most likely sacred in some way, to warrant a construction of such engineering mastery in such a special place.
In the set of terraces water was sacred in Incan times, so though the terraces themselves may not have been explicitly holy, their location as part of the sacred complex of Choquequirao, in the landscape considered sacred to this day, and the presence of a structure meant to honor and venerate water all makes it a sacred spot.
