The name/names of the sacred site
Sierra de Salkantay, Valle del Rio Apurimac
Description
In Peru, the Andes mountains were considered sacred by the Incas, and are still worshiped by some today as light beings known as Apus. The highest mountains, usually snow capped, are considered the most powerful. This range, overlooking the Apurimac river valley, includes Salkantay, one of the four most sacred mountains in the Cusco region. This view greets adventurous travelers beginning the two-day trek to Choquequirao, one of the last fortresses of the Incas, itself located on a powerful natural site.
