Makrugbeh sacred grove
Description
This grove have been protected for many years for cultural reasons - it is associated with the women's secret society (Bundo). (source: interviews with residents). I conducted research on sacred sites in the Tonkolili District of Sierra Leone in 2012. Typically, communities have 2-3 sacred groves: one for the male society (Poro), one for the female society (Bundo), and sometimes one for the chiefs.
