On a long walk in the winter, I came down through a restored Oak savanna at Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey. I could just see the Abbey Church through the bare oak trees. The area used to be an overgrown fir forest with a lot of brambles, but in the early 2000s the monks decided to initiate an ecological restoration project to restore the native Oak savanna to the area. The oaks are now thriving and the prayers of the monks mix with the songs of birds.
