All throughout the Hanan, the upper level of Choquequirao, are scattered huge chunks of rock. There are no records of what they might have been, although it is said that their origin could have been pre-Inca. This stone and the tree that stands next to it had a sense of still sacredness to them, overlooking the rest of the complex. In the background is a flattened mountaintop that could have been used for ceremonies.
The Hanan Pacha, or upper part of Choquequirao corresponded to the sacred world of the Spirits in Incan mythology. Only priests and shamans were allowed up to this area. Here was the start of the waterway used to feed the rest of the complex, itself considered sacred. This area was used for funerary rites (Hanan Pacha I) and to worship the elements, the sun, moon, stars, and the Earth (Hanan Pacha II and III).
In the background of Hanan Pacha III, the truncated mountain was used for ceremonial purposes as well.
